COVID-19 Return to Play Update and Clarifying Guidelines
-
Effective February 2022
The Lockport City School District Board of Education approved school physician, Dr. William Baier of Lockport Pediatrics, in consultation with the local American Academy of Pediatrics practitioners, recommended the following guidelines for students who received a positive COVID-19 test result. These guidelines should be followed for students when determining return to physical education/recess/athletics.
The following is a return to play guideline document that pertains to students five years of age and older. It is important to note this only pertains to students returning to physical education/recess/athletics after having a COVID-19 infection. This applies to two different categories of students.
Students under age 12 who were asymptomatic or who experienced mild symptoms do not require written clearance to return to physical education/recess/athletics. Students may return to play 10 days after the date of a positive test or 10 days after symptom onset date.
Students under age 12 who experienced moderate or severe symptoms (examples listed below) may return to exercise after physician (telemedicine or in-person) clearance 10 days after symptom onset:
- four or more days of fever greater than 100.4
- muscle aches
- chills
- prolonged fatigue
- moderate respiratory symptoms
Students aged 12 or older who were asymptomatic or who experienced non-systemic symptoms such as loss of taste or smell must secure written clearance to return to physical education/recess/athletics following either an in-person or telemedicine visit with a physician.
Students aged 12 or older who experienced any of the symptoms listed below must be evaluated by a physician to obtain a written clearance to return to physical education/recess/athletics.
- four or more days of fever greater than 100.4
- muscle aches
- chills
- prolonged fatigue
- moderate respiratory symptoms
Students aged 12 or older who experienced severe symptoms (respiratory) that required hospitalization, should be cleared in writing by a cardiologist to return to physical education/recess/athletics.
Parents/legal guardians are not able to waive the cardiac clearance requirement. Written clearance in all circumstances above must be returned to the school nurse. The local American Academy of Pediatrics meets regularly and updates will be provided to the District through the school physician as this matter continues to evolve.
