Dear Parents and Legal Guardians,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to provide an update regarding the bridge connected to George Southard Elementary School. As previously shared, the bridge was closed following a partial collapse to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and community.

Current Status and Ongoing Evaluation

Since the closure, the district has been working closely with our architectural partners to thoroughly assess the situation. This work includes:

  • Determining the cause of the bridge’s partial collapse;

  • Evaluating whether the bridge can be safely repaired or must be fully demolished; and

  • Exploring potential state-level assistance and funding options to support resolution of this issue.

Options Under Consideration

At our most recent Board of Education meeting, I shared that the district is actively considering several possible options, including:

  1. Repairing the bridge;

  2. Not repairing the bridge;

  3. Not repairing the bridge but installing sidewalks to ensure safe access for students; and

  4. Not repairing the bridge and exploring transportation options for students who previously relied on the bridge.

Since that meeting, discussions have continued with both our architects and representatives from the New York State Education Department. At this time, we are still carefully evaluating all relevant factors, including environmental considerations, remediation requirements, and whether this project may qualify as an emergency project eligible for state funding.

Given the complexity of these considerations, it may take several months to complete a comprehensive assessment and determine the appropriate course of action. Please know that no final decision has been made at this time. At our next Board of Education meeting, our architects will present additional information and outline recommended next steps as we work toward a resolution.

Safety and Emergency Evacuation Planning

I also want to address questions that have been raised regarding emergency evacuation procedures. I want to assure you that the school does have alternative evacuation plans in place that do not rely on access to the bridge. These alternative plans are also part of our existing safety plan filed with NYS Education Department.  Student and staff safety remain our top priority, and contingency plans are in place should a primary pathway ever be unavailable.

Ongoing Communication

It is important to me that our school community remains informed and has opportunities to share feedback. I will provide another update within the next 30–60 days to keep you apprised of our progress. My goal is to remain transparent and ensure timely communication throughout this process.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (716) 478-4800, or reach out to the school principal, Michael Hiller, at (716) 478-4771.

Thank you for your understanding and support as we work to ensure the continued safety and well-being of our students.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mathis Calvin
Superintendent of Schools
