In honor of Black History Month, students at across the district have had the incredible opportunity to meet Annette Daniels Taylor—an award-winning theater artist, poet, artist-filmmaker, and author. She brought 'Marvella Finds Her Magic' to life, leading a powerful discussion on overcoming challenges, discovering inner strength, and embracing creativity. 💫 Annette’s work has been showcased internationally and is part of The Poetry Collection at the University at Buffalo. Through her storytelling, she continues to uplift voices, inspire young minds, and celebrate the power of literacy. Thank you, Annette Daniels Taylor!

LCSD students showcased their incredible talent at the Black History Month Art School, where art became a powerful voice for history, identity, and inspiration. Students honored the achievements, resilience, and contributions of Black leaders, artists, and change makers. Here's a sample of the work that is on display!

At Anna Merritt Elementary, Mrs. Rudz's students read the story "Stone Soup," a classic tale that teaches valuable lessons about sharing, community, and resourcefulness. The second graders brought in different items to add to their classroom soup and everyone got to enjoy a bowl!

In celebratory of Black History Month, students had an unforgettable experience painting with Princessa Williams, who shared her journey as an artist and entrepreneur. Princessa showcased her incredible murals from Buffalo & Niagara Falls, explaining how art uplifts communities and the effort behind large-scale pieces. She also encouraged students to explore ways to market and sell their own artwork. Thank you Princessa for hosting a great experience for our students!

As we kick off National Children’s Dental Health Month this February, let’s give a shoutout to those dentist visits! 🦷✨ Remember, even if your smile feels a little different after losing a tooth, your dentist is there to keep everything on track—helping you grow strong, healthy smiles one tooth at a time! 😁

FEC Workshop: Creating Family Safety Plan Tuesday, February 11, 2025 Time: 4:30-5:30 p.m. Location: Family Empowerment Center, 57 Canal Street, Lockport, Suite 2 (enter through the parking lot door) Creating your family communication plan starts with one simple question: What if? Learn what to do if you are not with your family or cannot reach them during an emergency situation. Experts from Niagara University Border Community Service will also discuss what to have on hand in your home and vehicle and what to have in preparation for an emergency situation or extreme conditions. We are beyond proud of Anna Merritt student Jayceon D., who was honored with the Niagara County "Do The Right Thing Award"! 🏆👏 Presented by the Juvenile Task Force, in collaboration with local law enforcement and the Niagara Police Athletic League, this award recognizes students who lead by example with their positive actions. Jayceon was nominated by Mrs. Kurtz, who shared that he is always ready to step up, show kindness, and make a difference in the classroom and beyond. His empathy and leadership truly set him apart! Way to go, Jayceon! Keep inspiring those around you!

January 29: Lunar New Year No School District-wide there will be no school on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 for Lunar New Year.

Due to winter weather conditions, all schools in the Lockport City School District will be closed on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 for staff and students. This includes the cancellation of all after-school activities, sports, and events. At Anna Merritt, students are learning how to flip their negative thoughts into positive ones! Through the power of a growth mindset, they're discovering the tools to tackle challenges and see the brighter side. To make it stick, they’re using pancakes as a fun reminder—because just like flipping a pancake, flipping your mindset takes practice but leads to something great! 🥞

📚 We’re excited to introduce a new standards-based report card for K-4 students starting this year! 🎉 This report card highlights each child’s progress toward meeting New York State learning standards. Anna Merritt Elementary hosted their first ever Turkey Trot before Thanksgiving too! For 3rd grade, Brynn C, Faline G, Harper G, Bryson T, Loyal S, and Christian C all placed in the top finishers. For 4th grade, Layla D, Malayah F, Laila V, Lee J, Brayden M, and Reed Baldwin let the way for the group. Congratulations to all who participated!
